The music program for the younger students combines singing, movement, and rhythmic development. During every music class in these grades, we sing together and alone, we dance, and we learn. All of our activities are based on concepts similar to what our little ones are learning during their school day. We talk about beginning, middle and ending sounds in words. We talk about different animals and the words we might use to describe them. We work on our interpersonal skills such as sharing, listening and taking turns. We also use our class time to learn and rehearse songs for our Christmas Pageant and our Spring performance.
In grades 1-3, we are still young enough to enjoy the FUN of music and rhythm instruments while beginning our study of musical concepts and basic music theory. We enjoy dancing and using our instruments while we learn about note values, rhythm and melodic lines. The students are asked to sing together and alone, to lead the groups in musical activities and to express themsleves through musical performance. Once a month, our class is dedicated to reviewing the musical selections for our First Friday mass that we celebrate as a school. We also rehearse for our Christmas Pageant and Spring Concert during our general music classes.
These are the grades when our students are given every opportunity to study music both individually and in small groups. Our instrumental music program, which begins in the 4th grade, offers weekly small group lessons and weekly full band rehearsals. In addition to our instrumental music program, the children of grades 4-8 are offered a chance to sing with the "First Friday Choir" which rehearses weekly and provides the music for our monthly First Friday Mass.
In our General music classes, our students are learning more about where music began and the rich history that music has given us through the past 2000 years. We learn about composers, different genres and performers. We talk alot about what music has meant to our faith throughout our Catholic history and the role that it still plays today in our praise and worship of God.
2015: On Wednesdays, we will meet for a half hour lesson, grouped by instrument and ability level. We will only meet for full band rehearsals once per month. Each small group will prepare a piece for performance at either the Christmas Concert or the Spring Concert ( please see the school calendar for dates and times).
Any student in grade 4-8 who wishes to study an instrument is expected to rent or purchase that instrument on their own. Please contact me at email@example.com for more information about instrument rental or purchase.
Every Spring, we offer a full stage musical! In years past, we have performed "Schoolhouse Rocks Jr.", "Alice in Wonderland Jr.", "Suessical Jr.", "Willy Wonka Jr.", and "Beauty and the Beast Jr.".
This year, as a special event, we will welcome ALL students from grades 1-8 to be involved in the musical. Our production of "Shrek the Musical Jr." will be held on Friday April 17 and Saturday April 18, 2015. Rehearsals begin in January. Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information or for a copy of the rehearsal schedule.
