Teacher: Clair Ryan
My goal for our fifth grade students is that they will grow intellectually and spiritually. While meeting the challenges of the fifth grade curriculum, the children will participate in cooperative small group activities and whole class learning. Our Catholic faith will be integrated in our work throughout the day.
This year we are continuing to follow the Common Core State Standards in mathematics and English language arts. These standards guide teachers in helping students develop skills they will need to become critical thinkers and life long learners. More specifically, fifth garde mathematics will focus on operations with fractions and practice with the metric system. In addition to our work in reading, grammar, and writing, the children will learn how to use classical roots and affixes to determine word meanings.
Our science classes will begin with the scientific method and science process skills in preparation for the science fair. The science fair is a highlight of fifth grade and the children grow in so many ways through their participation. In social studies classes, the students will explore the geography and economics of the United States. While our study of the sacraments will be our major emphasis in religion, the liturgical year, prayer, and saints will also be included in our curriculum.

Fifth graders will have homework every day! Homework includes both written assignments and studying to maintain skills and prepare for tests. Parents should review their child's work and have him or her make corrections to it. By correcting their mistakes promptly, students will be reinforcing accurate information and reviewing essential skills.
